Everyone gets sick once in a while. Unfortunately, knowing that doesn't make the experience feel any better. When you're in bed with a sore throat, cough, and runny nose, all you want is to feel better. Here are four things you can do to speed up your recovery when you're feeling under the weather:
1. Get lots of rest.
If you're a busy person, the idea of resting might seem absurd. It's understandable that you don't want illness to slow you down. However, when you're sick, your body needs time to heal and recuperate. Resting is the best way to allow your body to do exactly that. Although you could load up on cold medicine and go about your day, that will probably mean you stay sick for longer. Instead, hang out in bed and give yourself permission to rest. Take lots of naps and watch all your favorite television shows and movies.
2. Drink fluids.
When you're sick, your appetite is usually the first thing to go. Unfortunately, you still need to get calories in your body to help it fight off your ailment. Drinking the right beverages can give you much needed hydration while also providing you with calories. Meal replacement drinks are great when you don't feel like eating. If you've been vomiting, drinks that contain electrolytes can help you rehydrate. Most of all, make sure to drink plenty of water.
3. Embrace cold medicine.
Cold medicine won't help you get better any faster, but it can alleviate your discomfort and take away the worst of your symptoms. Cough medicine can give your throat and lungs a rest and help you sleep at night. When taking cold medicine, always follow the instructions on the box. Never take more than is recommended in a single dose, and pay attention to the maximum daily dosage.
4. Go to the doctor for certain symptoms.
If you have a simple cold, there's no need to go to the doctor; you're better off staying at home and resting. However, there are certain symptoms that are cause for concern. If you have a fever of over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, if you are vomiting and cannot keep liquids down, or if you have difficulty breathing, you should visit a medical practice as soon as possible. These symptoms may be signs of a bacterial infection or serious illness, which your doctor will need to diagnose and treat with antibiotics.
